Cinema Industry

Since three hundred years ago two phenomena has merged into the western societies changing, substantially, the life of the human being. The first one was the Modernization that gathered the basic enlightenment's principles, which were widely broadened through the world thankful to the European’s migration. The second one is the process of Globalization, which currently merges to societies through many means. One of those means is the cinema industry. It is a paradox that the Globalization is thought as a recent phenomenon, which flourished roughly thirty years ago, and at the same time it uses films as means of expansion. However, what sorts of things are being expanded through the films by Globalization? Or, what sorts of things are being expanded through the globalization by films?

Whether the Modernization multiplied mainly European’s customs, globalization is exporting American values. Beside internet, free trade or television, films usually show the American way of life as a stereotype of what is good or bad, gorgeous or ugly, politically correct or incorrect, and so on. Whether the Modernization gained control on reasoning, Globalization is controlling the body overseas. Marilyn Monroe inspires which is considered as beautiful in a woman, Marlon Brando, Brad Pitt among others encourage man behavior, and so on.

Nonetheless, Globalization does not have only one track of course. The stream has shown how overseas patterns have influence throughout any culture around the world. Regarded to Cinema Industry, it means that other industries rather than Hollywood have the chance to be successful. Furthermore, Bollywood, the largest Cinema Industry in the world, began to be acknowledged last Academy Awards in Los Angeles. The same is happening to Nollywood, the biggest African Cinema Industry. However, it is too soon to state any conclusion, we just have to wait, so that the world could realize how those industries interact one to each other. Actually, we have to wait a little more in order to understand the way Globalization works.

  1. Hi Giancarlo,

I like the way you are thinking about the clash or overlap between modernization and globalization. Bollywood and Nollywood will no doubt continue to be growing influences. Also, it seems to me that slowly Hollywood is broadening its ideas about what it means to be an "American" leading man or woman, perhaps especially for women?

  2. Hey Giancarlo, I agree with your statement about how the cinema industry has a huge influence on the culture and beliefs of a specific place. Years earlier, people believed that all the cultures over the world were influenced by Hollywood; however, today it is possible see how some cultures, as the Indian and even the African one, have created their own cinema industry. This new trends, have changed the perspective of how the world’s cultures can be affected by the Globalization. Nonetheless, cinema is not only a premeditated factory to influencing people; also it is possible to see how independent films have totally different goals.
